Welcome to My Website!
If you will be moving to Iowa City, or if you have lived here all your life, and you need a painter/paperhanger, please consider me. I’ve been working full time as a decorating contractor in Iowa City since 1975, and can take care of all your painting, restoration, refinishing, and paperhanging needs.
More about Clark Kenyon Decorating
My name is Clark Kenyon, and I have been doing interior painting and refinishing, wallpapering, wallpaper removal, drywalling, and surface restoration for the last 35 years in Iowa City. I do not paint exteriors. I do residential and commercial jobs, new construction and redecorating of existing homes, businesses, and institutions. No job is too big or too small. I prefer to work in the Iowa City area, but will travel to work within a 10 mile radius of the city. I work alone or, if the job is very big, with the help of another painting contractor who started out working for me, then launched his own successful business. I do one job at a time until each is finished before moving on to the next. All jobs are bid with a binding contract which spells out in black and white the work to be done, the cost, and the method of payment. Estimates are free, and contracts are mailed promptly after the estimate has been made. Prices are valid for one year from the date of the contract. I comply with all applicable state laws, including being a Registered Contractor with the Iowa Department of Workforce Development, holding an Iowa Retail Sales Permit, and Lead-Safe Renovator Certification. I am fully covered with liability insurance, although I am proud to point out that in over 35 years of business I have never had to file a claim.
If I have worked for you before you may have known me as a paperhanger, but I have always done the related jobs of removal of old wallcovering, wall repair/restoration, and painting. In the last ten years or so, during a period when most of the neighborhood paint stores have stopped selling wallcoverings, the popularity of wallpaper and vinyl seems to have declined. Therefore, most of my work now consists of painting. But, while you can easily hire a painter, not many painters can install wallcovering. Fewer still have been called the best paperhanger in town, as I have.
One specialty of which I am particularly proud is surface restoration, by which I mean repair and upgrading of walls, ceilings and woodwork. It's not a simple filling of a few nail holes before starting to paint, but may involve removing ten layers of old, stained wallpaper, repairing structural cracks and replacing crumbling plaster with drywall, and stripping and refinishing paint-spattered woodwork. The work is intense, but the results are amazing. Realtors, for your clients and customers just coming to Iowa City and purchasing a beautiful old house that "needs attention" inside, I am the answer to the question "whom do you recommend to repair these walls as well as paint them?"
A job that most painters would just as soon not have to deal with is the removal of old wallcovering. This is another area in which I have specialized for as long as I have been in business, since new wallcovering always looks best and lasts longest if the old can be removed first. I will do wallcovering removal as a standalone job, too. If you want to do your own painting, or hire another painter, I am happy to bid just the removal and cleaning.
As a painter and paperhanger I take great pride doing a fast, clean job. One of my foremost goals is to work as unobtrusively as the job will allow, and always to leave the work site as clean as I found it. I understand perfectly how my customers would want a contractor to respect their homes and property. Ask anyone I have ever worked for and they will remember this about me.

I hope the next time you are looking for a painter/paperhanger you will give me a call. To those of you who have never worked with me before, I look forward to meeting you. To old friends who haven't called me in a while, I look forward to reestablishing our acquaintance. If you have any questions about my work, please don't hesitate to call.
